Lesson Overview
The course began with the duty of care and worked outward from it: the principles training rests on, how to build and periodise a programme toward a goal, how to run a safe session, how to develop strength, endurance, and good movement, the demands of load carriage, the recovery, nutrition, and injury work that keep people whole, how to train anywhere without facilities, and how to build mental robustness through physical training. This last lesson brings all of that to the moment it is measured. An instructor who can train a group must also be able to test it, and testing is its own discipline. Done well, a test tells the truth about a soldier's readiness, fairly and identically for everyone, and feeds that truth back into the programme. Done badly, it injures the unready, flatters the favoured, punishes the disliked, and records numbers that mean nothing.
One thing must be clear from the outset: the standard you test against, the Annual Fitness Test, and its exact pass marks are set by the proper authority and carried by the Physical Training Component and the Recruit Fitness Programme. You do not invent them, soften them, or raise them. Your work is to conduct the test to that standard, faithfully and identically for all, and to record the result honestly.
By the end you will be able to conduct the Annual Fitness Test safely, fairly, and to a consistent standard, apply a banded standard honestly and without favour or fear, keep accurate records of attendance, sessions, results, and injuries, run a supportive and progressive remedial programme for those below the standard, and explain how the instructor's accountability for safety, fairness, and honest reporting holds the whole role together. The lesson also says plainly how the qualification is itself earned: not from this page, but in person, under qualified supervision, through a practical instruction assessment.

Conducting the test: safe, fair, and the same for all
A fitness test is a controlled measurement, and a measurement is only worth having if it is accurate and taken the same way for every soldier. The instructor's job at the test is narrow and exacting: keep everyone safe, hold the conditions identical, measure precisely, and apply one standard. Four duties carry that, and they are best learned together because they fail together.
First, medical readiness and the warm-up. No soldier is tested who has not been cleared as fit to test that day by a medical officer or qualified physical-training authority. This is not a formality; it is where the duty of care from Lesson 01 meets the test. A soldier returning from injury, on a medical downgrade, pregnant, or simply unwell does not take the standard test; they follow the separate graduated or return-to-fitness pathway the medical authority directs. When in doubt, you do not test; you refer. Before any soldier runs, marches, or strains against a clock, the whole group is warmed up properly, raising the heart rate gradually, mobilising the joints the events will load, and rehearsing the movements at low intensity, exactly as taught in Lesson 04. A cold soldier driven straight into a maximal effort is an injury you caused. The warm-up is part of the test, not a preliminary to skip when time is short.
Second, identical instructions and conditions. Every soldier must take the test under the same conditions and hear the same instructions, because anything that differs between soldiers becomes part of the result and corrupts it. Brief the whole group together, in the same words, before anyone begins: what each event is, how it is conducted, what counts as a good repetition, what the time limit or target is, how a fault is called, and how to signal distress and stop. The course must be the same measured course, the kit the same kit the standard specifies, the surface and conditions as alike as you can make them, and the order and recovery between events the same for all. Where the climate is hot and humid, as the Physical Training Component warns, the demanding events are held in the cooler hours and water is issued generously, but in those conditions for everyone, not eased for one and not another. Fairness is not a feeling; it is identical conditions, demonstrably the same for the first soldier and the last.
Third, accurate measurement and timing. A test result is a number, and a careless number is a lie told with a stopwatch. Measure the run course before the day and confirm it; do not trust a course someone says is the right length. Start the clock cleanly on a clear command and read it precisely at the finish, ideally with a second instructor timing alongside on a long event so no single error stands unchecked. Count repetitions with a clear running tally, and count only those that meet the form standard you briefed: no half press-ups, no repetitions that cut the range, the same for the soldier you like and the one you do not. Where an event is pass or fail against a time or a task, as the loaded march and the casualty drag are, record the pass or fail and the figure behind it. Sloppy timing and generous counting do no one a kindness; they put an unready soldier into the field believing they are ready, which is the unkindest thing a test can do.
Fourth, one standard, applied to everyone. The standard is fixed and it is not yours. Within the correct band for the soldier's age and sex, the pass mark is what the proper authority has set, and you apply it as written, to the favourite and the friend and the soldier who tries your patience alike. You do not wave a friend through a few repetitions short, and you do not hold a disliked soldier to a stricter count than the standard requires. Favour and fear are the two ways fairness dies at a test; an instructor who yields to either has stopped measuring readiness and started measuring their own preferences. The standard tested against is the Annual Fitness Test, set by
the proper authority. The instructor conducts it; the instructor
does not set it, soften it, or stiffen it.
What the standard is, and what it is for
A standard can look like an arbitrary hurdle to the soldier just below it, so an instructor must understand what it is for and be able to explain it: a standard a soldier understands is one they are far more willing to meet. The Annual Fitness Test measures the three parts of soldier fitness the Recruit Fitness Programme builds: aerobic endurance, the ability to keep going by running, marching, and carrying over time; muscular endurance, the ability to push, lift, and carry and to keep doing so; and core strength, the trunk stability that protects the back under load and keeps a soldier working when tired. The loaded-march element measures combat fitness directly, the plain ability to move an operational load over a distance and arrive still able to work. These are not gymnasium vanities. For a small, lightly armed home-defence force whose first calling is humanitarian, they are the physical floor beneath useful service: the endurance to work through a long relief task, the strength to carry kit and a casualty, the robustness to do it again the next day without breaking.
That is why the standard exists, and why its floor does not move. The bands recognise a real thing, that a soldier of fifty and a soldier of twenty, a man and a woman, do not arrive at the same task with the same physiology, and they set the demand fairly within those differences. What the bands never do is lower the floor below what the work actually requires, because a casualty does not weigh less for the person dragging them and a flood does not recede for a tired section. So a banded standard is fair in two directions at once: it asks a demand suited to the soldier's circumstances, and it asks enough that meeting it means something. The instructor holds that standard exactly and without favour or fear, and the honesty is the point. A standard quietly relaxed for a friend is no kindness; it is a falsehood entered into the record, and on a bad day a soldier sent into the field less ready than the paper says. This is the same hard principle the Foundations of Military Leadership course teaches as the standard you walk past: a standard is not what is written down but the lowest performance the person holding it is known to accept, and an instructor who lets it slip once has repriced it for everyone.
The instructor's records, and why honesty in them matters
Much of an instructor's real authority lives not in the session but in the record book. What is recorded is what improves, as the Recruit Fitness Programme says of the training log, and the same holds at the scale of a group. The instructor keeps an honest, dated account of four things, each doing a particular kind of work.
Attendance records who trained and who did not, because a programme only works on the people it reaches, and a soldier who missed half the build-up is not the same soldier at the test as one who attended throughout. Session records note what was done, the run distance and pace, the strength work, the march load and distance, and how the group coped, so a programme can be reviewed and adjusted rather than repeated blindly. Test results record each soldier's figures against each event, dated, with the pass or fail plainly marked, so standing is known and progress over time read at a glance. Injuries and referrals record any injury, what was done, and where a soldier was sent on, so nothing falls between training staff and the medical centre and so a pattern, a course that keeps producing the same injury, can be seen and corrected.
Honesty matters here because every later decision rests on it. The soldier's own training rests on it: an honest record shows them where they stand and what to work on, while a flattering one robs them of the truth they need to improve. The programme rests on it: only honest session and result records let an instructor see what is working and change what is not. Safety rests on it: an honest injury record is how a dangerous pattern is caught before it hurts the next soldier, and a falsified one buries the warning. And trust rests on it: the soldier's trust that the book tells the truth about them, the command's and the medical authority's trust that what the instructor reports is real. A record exists to be relied on by people who were not there. The figure below sets out the four things it tracks and what each is for.

Remedial training: bringing people up, safely
Some soldiers will be below the standard at the test. That is expected, it is not a disgrace, and the instructor's job then is not to judge but to bring them up. The Recruit Fitness Programme states the spirit exactly: there is no shame in a modest starting point, only in not improving from it. Carry that into remedial work and most of it follows.
A soldier placed on remedial training is assessed honestly to find where they actually stand, then given a progressive programme built on the same principles as the rest of the course: start where the soldier honestly is, not where you wish they were; load gradually so the body adapts without injury, since the soldier below the standard is often the one most at risk of being hurt by too much too soon; build the weak component without neglecting the others; and retest only when the build-up says they are ready, not on an arbitrary date that sets them up to fail again. The manner matters as much as the method. Remedial training is conducted supportively, in private where dignity requires it, framed as the ordinary business of getting fitter rather than a punishment parade. An encouraged soldier improves; a shamed soldier hides, and a soldier who hides gets injured. The instructor who can take a soldier from well below the standard to comfortably above it, safely and with their confidence intact, has done the hardest and most valuable thing in the whole role. Where a soldier cannot make progress despite honest effort, that too is recorded and referred, because a persistent inability to improve may be a medical matter beyond the instructor's competence, and the duty then is to refer, not to drive harder.
Fairness and care, held together
Two messages in this lesson can sound opposed: hold the standard for everyone without exception, and care genuinely for the individual. They are not opposed. They are two halves of the same duty, and an instructor who drops either has failed.
Hold only the standard, coldly, and you become a hurdle soldiers either clear or are discarded against, which wastes people a small force cannot spare and breaks the duty of care the course is built on. Hold only the care, soften the standard out of sympathy, and you send the unready into the field believing themselves ready, the cruellest outcome of all and a betrayal of the very people you meant to spare. The instructor holds both at once: the standard is fixed and applied to all without favour or fear, and the response to a soldier who falls below it is not rejection but a hand up, a supportive remedial programme that brings them to the standard safely. Fairness is the standard held equally; care is the help given honestly to meet it. The figure below shows the two duties as the single thing they are.

The instructor's accountability
Everything in this lesson gathers into one idea: the instructor is accountable. Other people's safety, the fairness of the test, and the truth of the record are in the instructor's keeping, and the instructor answers for all three.
Accountable for safety means the instructor owns the medical clearance, the warm-up, the conditions, and the decision to stop a soldier or a session when something is wrong; an injury that a proper duty of care would have prevented is the instructor's to answer for. Accountable for fairness means the instructor owns the identical conditions and the single standard, and answers for any soldier passed or failed against anything other than the standard honestly applied. Accountable for honest reporting means the instructor owns the record and answers for its truth: the result entered as it was, the injury logged as it happened, the referral made when needed. This is exactly why the qualification cannot be granted from a screen, and it is the natural close of a course that began with the duty of care: the authority to test and train others is given only to someone who has shown, in person and under watchful eyes, that they will carry it safely, fairly, and honestly.
How the qualification is earned and certified
This course has taught the knowledge an instructor needs, but knowledge is not the qualification. As the README says plainly and the Physical Training Component insists for fitness generally, physical training is taught by doing, so the instructor qualification is completed and certified in person, under qualified physical-training and medical supervision, through a practical instruction assessment. You demonstrate, on real soldiers and under the eyes of qualified staff, that you can warm a group up safely, lead a sound session, coach good movement and correct bad, conduct a test fairly and accurately, keep an honest record, run remedial work supportively, and know the edge of your competence and refer beyond it. The written course assumes you already meet the Army's own fitness standard, and the whole of it is a draft for command and medical approval, not in force until the proper authority and qualified medical and physical-training staff have reviewed it. The page can make you ready to be assessed. Only the assessment, watched and signed off in person, makes you an instructor.
In Practice: The Test Day at a Coastal Sports Ground
A section of the RKA is to take the Annual Fitness Test at a public sports ground near the coast, lent for the morning, while the section trains for a humanitarian readiness exercise. A newly qualified instructor runs the test. The day is warm and the air heavy, so the demanding events are set for the cool of early morning and extra water is laid on for everyone, the same for all.
Before anyone runs, the instructor confirms each soldier has been cleared as fit to test that day. One soldier, recently back from an ankle injury, has not been cleared for the full test; the instructor does not improvise a modified version on the spot but follows the medical authority's direction for a return-to-fitness assessment and records exactly that. The run course was paced and confirmed the evening before, so its length is not in doubt. The whole section is warmed up together, joints mobilised and movements rehearsed, before a clock starts on anyone. The instructor briefs every event in the same words to the whole group, what counts as a good repetition, what the time means, how to signal distress and stop, then holds those conditions identical down the line: the same course, the same kit the standard calls for, the same recovery between events, a second pair of eyes timing the long run, and only good repetitions counted, for the soldier the instructor came up with and the one who has been difficult all week alike.
Two soldiers finish below the standard on press-ups, one a friend of the instructor. The instructor records both honestly, the figure as it was and the fail marked plainly, with no quiet rounding-up for the friend and no extra strictness for anyone. There is no scene. Afterwards, in private, the instructor tells each where they fell short and starts them on a remedial plan built from where they actually stand, gradual, supportive, framed as the ordinary work of getting fitter, with a retest when the build-up says they are ready and not before. A third soldier reports a sharp knee pain partway through; the instructor stops that soldier at once, records the injury and the action, and refers them to the medical centre rather than pressing them to finish. By the end of the morning the record holds the plain truth: who passed, who did not and by how much, who was injured and where they were sent, and who is now on remedial training. It is a record the section commander and the medical authority can rely on without having been there. The standard was held equally, every soldier kept safe, and what was written down was true. That is the whole of the instructor's job in one morning, and why the qualification behind it is earned in person and not on paper.

Think of a real moment, in fitness, in drill, in any task where a standard is held, when fairness to the group and kindness to one person seemed to pull against each other. What goes right when an instructor holds the standard exactly and offers a genuine hand up to meet it? What goes wrong if they soften the standard for someone they like, or hold it coldly with no help offered? Why must getting results and keeping people safe be carried together, never one at the cost of the other?
